When it rains in Lanarkshire

Look no further if you’re wondering what to do on a rainy day in Lanarkshire. There are plenty of activities and attractions that will keep you cosy and comfortable indoors on a rainy day. You can visit our See and Do and discover many ways to explore the region indoors.

Visit a museum

Museums are fantastic creative spaces for exploring and learning, and in Lanarkshire, we have plenty.

Why not take shelter in Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum on a rainy day in Lanarkshire? This 5-star Visit Scotland attraction carefully takes care of an extension collection spanning 14,000 years of rural life in Biggar and Upper Clydesdale. Carrying on the rural theme, you can explore the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride. This fantastic 5-star museum, farmhouse and historic working farm lets you get up close and personal with the cattle, pigs, sheep and hens, and you can find one of Scotland’s oldest tractors in the museum too!

Cotton production was a significant industry in Scotland in the 19th and Lanarkshire was home to one of the largest factories in the world. Now a beautifully restored UNESCO World Heritage site, New Lanark World Heritage Centre is truly a feast for the eyes. With its historical landscape and beautiful buildings, visitors can enjoy over 200 years of social history. Catering facilities are available for visitors to enjoy, and if the rain stops, why not visit the nearby Falls of Clyde reserve?

You can learn about one of Scotland’s famous explorers at the David Livingstone Birthplace. Located in Blanytre, the attraction offers an interactive exhibition and an exhilarating children’s playpark inspired by David Livingstone’s steamboat and his voyages down Africa’s rivers.

Burn off energy

When visiting Rutherglen, there are two attractions that are simply perfect for a rainy day.

FlipOut guarantees hours of endless indoor fun for children with its trampolines, ninja assault course, laser quest and drop slides.

For an experience the whole family and friends can get involved in, TopGolf is one to try. At this attraction, players score points by hitting balls (assigned using a microchip technology) into any target. With over 70 heated hitting bays available on a rainy day, visitors can participate in high-tech golf regardless of their experience with the sport, appealing to golfers and non-golfers alike.

Both attractions offer catering, too, making it a perfect way to sit back and take a breather with a hot brew in hand on a rainy day.

Thrilling ice and water experiences

You won’t stay dry for long at The Time Capsule, but at least you will be wet indoors!

This large waterpark located in Coatbridge is a great way to spend a few hours with so many features to keep you entertained. You can enjoy a ride on the Tornado Tantrum where an entire family of four can experience the thrills together. There are spectacular twist flumes, a Tsunami wave pool, and the coral cove is a spot for the little ones for some sheltered time away from the adrenalin rush of the water slides.

After you have exhausted yourselves with the excitement of swooshing down the slides, why not grab a snack in a choice of 3 cafes? If you have more energy in the tank, you can make a day of it at The Time Capsule, which boasts an ice arena and a soft play over 3 levels.

East Kilbride Ice Rink also offers you the chance to enjoy some relaxed skating, and for hard-core ice enthusiasts, why not try some curling?

Explore a rainforest

When you think of rainforests, you naturally think of these being outdoors.  Not this one!

Amazonia based at M&D’s is a firm favourite with visitors. This temperature-controlled tropical house open 7 days per week, guarantees lots of fun and learning.   Here you can marvel at the monkeys or visit the dark side of the nocturnal area to discover the bats as they are in hot pursuit of their next feed.

It might be raining, it might even be pouring, but with a visit to Lanarkshire, it certainly doesn’t have to be boring. From creative learning experiences to full-on family fun, there is plenty to do indoors to keep everyone entertained on a rainy day.
