For a fun day out with a difference, families are spoiled for choice in Lanarkshire.
At Coatbridge’s famous Time Capsule, children of all ages – and their grown-ups – can brave twisting twin flumes and a tsunami wave pool, or escape to the sanctuary of Cove Island, where the water can be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. This fun waterpark offers the best waterslides around – and there is a 25m swimming pool too if you prefer to splash around on your own.
Marvel at mischievous monkeys, have a hoot with the parrots and prepare to be amazed at the array of bats, kinkajou, snakes and scorpions in the nocturnal area of Scotland’s indoor rainforest. Amazonia, a temperature-controlled tropical house based at M&D’s in Strathclyde Park, is home to 60 different species and it runs popular animal-handling sessions - a rare chance to get up close and personal with snakes, lizards, tortoises, creepy crawlies and more.
There is a lot going on at Clyde Valley Farm Park in Crossford, from all sizes of pedal go-karts and tractors to a sand pit, climbing frame, trampolines, slides and 18-hole crazy golf. On the farm, there are interesting animals to meet, including Highland cows, sheep, pigs, horses, deer, chickens, rabbits, llamas and wallabies. The fantastic, brand-new, Cattle Court allows visitors to walk above the animals’ pens and for a fun experience, take Clyde Valley’s famous Safari Train into the fields to meet some of the friendly creatures which make this popular park such a fascinating day out.
Have a countryside adventure at the National Museum of Rural Life, a five-star attraction, farmhouse and historic working farm on the outskirts of East Kilbride. In the fascinating museum galleries, discover how the land, people and new ways of working have shaped Scotland's rural history, and visit Scotland's largest collection of tractors and combine harvesters. Take a walk – or get the tractor – up to the farm to see cattle, pigs, sheep and hens (and look out for the magnificent Clydesdales in the fields.) Finish off the perfect day out with tea, cake or a lovely lunch in the award-winning café.
